Droning Around in Downtown Austin / by Shane Wilder

After doing a series on drones, I thought it would be a good idea to show a few drone videos. Now, all of my videos are in the drone section of my portfolio, but I thought it apropos to go into detail on some of the videos. For this, I thought I’d show some downtown shots.

Okay, so this was shot at Pease District Park. It was a great place because I had some nature to add to the downtown skyline. It allowed me to give a contrast between the nature around the park and then pull out to show downtown all around it. You can see the House Park football field, Moody Bank, the Frost Tower, and the Capitol building. I want to note that for these shots I went to a height of 350 feet. It is an awkward feeling coming down from that height as it seems like the drone was standing still because it can only lower so fast. A quick check of the HUD is reassuring to let you know that you are actually coming down.

I love Zilker Park. There is so much to do there and it is just south of the river from downtown. I shot this on the same day as the previous video. I took advantage of showing off the main part of the park and revealed downtown. I decided to finish with a shot off the pier and a front decided to come in. The winds were calm and then picked up quickly. So, I had to bring the drone back in because to keep it out would have lead to a chance of another gust forcing me into the Colorado river. I did this quickly and forgot to stop recording until I landed. When I looked at the clip, I thought that it would make a cool ending shot and put it in the video.

This was my second outing at Zilker with the drone. I took it from a different angle/ I focused more on the nature and the other fun things at Zilker. It was in May, so I went to the hillside theatre. This is an outdoor theatre where people sit on the grass and watch a play. Being may, it was time for Shakespeare in the Park. The play this year was The Merchant of Venice. To shoot it I had to be aware of my surroundings as there are power lines over the hill to supply power to the theatre. I was also not willing to fly over the stage as the lights worried me and it was not worth the risk. The end of the video is in the greenbelt that I walked into from the park. There is a lot I could say about shooting there, but it was just a normal nature flight. I will get into how I do nature flights on a later post.

Next time I will get into the Christmas spirit with some christmas photos.

‘Til next time.

Cheers,
