A Chilly Outdoor Shoot / by Shane Wilder

Welcome.  Today, i thought I'd talk a little bit about a photo shoot I did on January, 16, 2016.

The client, David Huertas, hired me to do an hour long shoot at The Midland Center, in Midland, TX.  We were both ready for a great morning, and then a cold front came through.  As I recall, the temperature did not get above 37 degrees while we were out.  By the end of the shoot, I had no feeling in my hands and could barely press the shutter, but it was worth it to take some great photos that I was proud of and made the client happy.

I am not going to show all of the photos here, as there are 30 from this hour long shoot, but I wanted to show enough, that you can get inside my mind.  If you want to view all of them, they are available on flickr, at: https://flic.kr/s/aHskt2d8CQ

As always, if you want to check out any of my photos, you can find them on my flickr and many of my favorites on Instagram via the social links.

So lets begin.

This was one of the shots that the client wanted.  I try to get anything that the client requests, within reason. (If you ask me to do a shoot on railroad tracks, I will refuse...But that is another story.)

I took his idea and changed angles for these shots.  Since he was wearing shades, I feel these work better with out him looking at the camera.

In keeping with the wintry theme,  I took the client across the street to a bistro.  I want to point out the reflection in the table, which makes His hands really stand out.

I finally made the client lose the coat and scarf in favor of a suit and tie.  I chose to have him keep the sunglasses, as I felt they made him look more suave when combined with the pose.  The angle of the sun made for some interesting shadows.  There is also a sense of authority caused by him standing on a higher plane than me.

This was one of the client's ideas, He wanted a shot that showed the Petroleum Building predominantly in the background.  One again, he is on a higher plane, which allowed me to fill the space with the building he wanted.

These are fun ones using props I provided.  As the client was a fan of suits and bow-ties, I decided to include some props to take him back in time.  I love the idea of taking people back in time and at some point I want to do a photo shoot of some kind (Wedding, Graduation, Engagement, or even an Event) with a 1920's theme.  I think they would make wonderful black and whites.  Hell, they could even work in hyper-stylized color.

These final two are standard portraits, utilizing a local fountain.  The the colors in the color photo really pop, but I made sure to keep the photo cool, to keep with the winter chill theme.

After the final photos were snapped, we called it a day, as we were both freezing and I could no longer feel my fingers.  Given more time and better weather, I think we could have done a lot more.

In the end, the client was happy with what he recieved, and that is what matters.  He already enjoyed my style of photography and was happy with the artisitic direction that I took with the shoot.

Cheers,
