I love records. It is not only the sound of vinyl...It is the pomp and circumstance involved. Like smoking a pipe, you don't get instant gratification.
A pipe smoker would have to fill the pipe, tamper it, and then light it. They would then spend their time controlling their intake to keep the pipe from getting too hot. Once done, the pipe would be cleaned and put away.
At the same time a record must be cleaned, put on the turntable, and then the needle must be dropped on it in order to listen to the music. Half way through, the record must be flipped and, when both sides are finished, the record must be put up.
I find that this pomp and circumstance of listening to a record adds to the enjoyment. As there is no way to skip tracks without getting up and trying to cue each song, (which is no mean feat), meaning the listener is forced to listen to the entire album.
This means you actually have to listen to the music, not just hear it.
I also love record shops. My favorite is Groover's Paradise off of Lake Travis.
The owner always has good advise on music and a story to tell. If you want to know something about the history of rock 'n' roll, this is your place.
Because records have been around for so long it is easy to lose all track of time while crate digging for something new to play. That is what makes the hobby so fun, you don't know what you are going to find.
So, to music fans...I say dust off them platters and drop the needle on some good tunes.
'Til next time.
Cheers,
